The Salem witch trial was actually caused by spreads of rumors. Anybody could accuse someone of being a witch, and that person would be killed one way or another. That is why it is such a big topic, nobody was safe. If you were accused and failed the test, you were a witch and were burnt at the stake. If you passed the test- you were dead anyways. Hope this helps!

It was hatred, not ergot. Want your neighbor's land? Accuse the old girl of being a witch. Getting teased by someone in school? Accuse her of being a witch. Your cow quit giving milk & you didn't know the cause? Accuse the unpleasant old widow who lives in a shabby hut of being a witch-who is going to argue? And the tests they gave for you to prove you WEREN'T a witch were guaranteed to kill you anyhow, so you had NO hope if you were accused. This was all done in the name of "religion"-this is how easily people can be used & fooled by organised religion.
