What was the Spanish-American war fought over?

The Spanish?American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States. The fight was fought over the liberation of Cuba from Spain. During the 1870s the Cuban people rebelled against Spanish rule.

So the United States altruistically entered that war because we cared about Cuba?
