On an "ept" pregnancy test, there are 2 windows. What does the 2nd window mean?

My friend bought a 3 pack of ept pregnancy tests and took one to see if she was pregnant. There are 2 viewing windows. The 1st window read -. The 2nd window read
"l". She thought that the "'-" meant not pregnant, threw the box away, put the other two unused tests in her medicine cabinet and ignored the 2nd window that read "l" what does that 2nd window mean? She and I went on the website but it doesn't say what the 2nd window means. It says that + in the 1st window means pregnant and - not pregnant. Hers reads - and then l. Do you put the two symbols together to make a plus? If not then what does the 2nd ( rectangle) box mean? She just took another test and it reads" -" and " l "again. Does anyone have an ept kit to tell use what the 2nd box means? Please help cause she is going crazy on me :). Thanks!

There are two windows on every non-digital pregnancy test. The first one is the control window, which will always show a line to prove the test is working properly. The second window is the test window, which will either show or not show (or do + and - like you mentioned) to indicate a positive or negative result.

If those ones don't read well or you can't understand them, try getting a different kind of pregnancy test that's easier to read and understand. If all else fails, I'm sure most clinics offer free pregnancy testing in their offices, and they can tell you there.

Poindexta, The tests are new and not expired. What does the "l" window mean??? Positive??? It's a VERY clear "l"

That sounds like the control window to me, which just shows if the test is working properly. And if the test window shows + or - and your friend got the -, then it is likely that the test proved negative.

You're Awesome!!! Thank-You!!!!!

Hi Poindextra, I'm told the Second window is the control window, not the 1st one like you thought, is this correct?

Either way, one window is always a control and the other is the test. Where they're located on the test depends on manufacturer :)

You can have a false negative. But you don't add anything together, the second window is the "control" window to show that the strip is soaked with urine. Wait a few days then take another one. Write down your periods to keep track of them and be RESPONSIBLE!
Tell your friend that instructions are IMPORTANT, and after she has the responsibility of a child even more so for everyday life!

She is 46 years old with 1 child, who is 10. She had a very hard time conceiving and yes, she IS responcible but this confused her, as she wishes not to have and more children. Thank-You sooo much for your help!!!! :)
