Does the Queen of England/Wales have any real power?
How much power the Queen of England and other historical members of the Royal family has, has varied over the years. In current times, she has the 'official' authority to deploy military forces, to 'fire' cabinet and to refuse to give her stamp of approval to a piece of legislation that is put before her for Assent. In truth and practicality if she were to do this it could cause such an upheaval in government that she is not likely to do so except in a case of dire need. From a practical point of view, the current monarchical system is for social purposes and out of tradition. Besides, someone must live in those houses.
