I have been doing lessons with her for 5 months once every week. Shes really seeing me progress and improving and now Im in the first row! But next year I dont want to do band and Im not and I dont know how to tell her because she will be upset with me and I will feel like a failure to her since I am quitting something.

Nonsense. Just explain to her that you're very grateful for her time and patience, but you don't want to take band, or can't fit it into your schedule, or whatever. Trust me, she'll understand.

People, especially teens, quit stuff all the time. It's normal, I think, because as one is growing up, he or she is inclined to try many different things. If your flute instructor has had other students, she has prolly seen such instances before. Just be nice about telling her that you're moving on to something else.
