What is a hernia? I need somebody to dumb it down for a girl. How do you get one? Does it go away? Why do some need surgery?

Doing what things or activities causes them?

In males, there is a particular area that is subject to having a tear occur that causes bulging. Guys know when the Dr says "turn your head and cough" that he is going to check for an inguinal hernia. This is common in guys where the inside opening above the testicles has a tear and a bulge occurs that is not comfortable. It can occur by strong physical activity, an unfortunate blow to the area or even being born with it. A common surgery is performed to repair the hernia. Sometimes a "screen" is used to do a repair if more than one hernia is present. Sometimes a portion of the intestine may pop through the inner tear and then you may have a strangulated hernia that will require immediate surgery. Usually, you can push them back in place.

It's a tear in the lining of your abdomen in which intestines may begin protruding out. Surgery is necessary to replace the organs and seal the tear. Many strenuous activities can cause this but especially child birth.

Just to make it simple.... its when your intestine/(inside body part) slips out of the torn muscle... if you don't know about it the intestine that has slipped out will die and will need to be cut off. Hernias get worst and worst till you do something about it. i have a minor hernia right now from lifting weights.... not bad enough for an operation.Oh and they are caused primarily from a lack of oxygen while working out. Make sure to give your abs a good rest after an exercise.... c:

Hernias can happen in different places, but it's pretty much just a tear or a weakened area in a muscle that allows a bulge of internal organs to protrude. Usually, it's in the abdomen but it can be in the groin or scrotum as well. Depending on the severity and location of the hernia and the age of the person, a doctor might just want to keep an eye on it and not correct it. But the only way to repair a hernia is by doing surgery.
