Why are rocks stacked on the side of some roads?

it's a Native American thing... but we Canadian's :) anyone, anywhere, can build these, little guide men, out of the rocks you find on trails, or off the side of the road, or anywhere, when you go exploring!!... they try to point you in the right direction :)

Rocks that are stacked up like that are normally referred to as cairns. They are a Scottish tradition that amazes people up to now including scientist with their formation. They are generally used to mark paths or as a memorial for events or a people.

they might be like barriors, are you talking about urban roads like highways or dirt roads? if its a dirt road it would be understandable

I've noticed these up in Canada along the highway while going fishing. On one trip we burnt out a wheel bearing and had to drive to get a new one (about 4 hours round trip) it happened next to one stack of rocks. I thought this happened to somebody else and they got bored sitting with the trailer.

One Good reason : As in Rock land county , New York State.
When digging foundation for a Home, the Rocks are placed on or ,around the
Perimeter of the property.
