How should I take care of my curly hair?

I have BIG hair. It's big and curly, not particularly thick but not thin either, and sticks out to the sides even if I brush it with a wet brush, and sleep with it in braids. I usually wear it long, it doesn't poof out as much when it's long. But recently I got a haircut (a really bad haircut) and now my hair stops a little above my shoulders. (She basically took the scissors and cut it all off, no layers or anything, she just sheared it up to my shoulders.) If I try to wear it down it'll poof in an hour, and I end up looking like a "cute Albert Einstein" as my best friend put it. I don't have time for fancy keratin/relaxer treatments, or straightening, I've tried a Brazilian blowout but it made me sick to my stomach, and it's not that I don't like the curls, I just don't like the poof. So how can I keep my curls, but say goodbye to the poof!?

I use Cibu oil for my hair (which is a type of Anti-Frizz) and a clarifying shampoo and conditioner (just so you know), and I am a bit Caribbean
