The purpose of art is to extend and expand our shared common visual language. It also serves as a commemoration of an important event and as a vehicle for religious ritual. Art is a means of recording of visual data as well as creating beauty.
I believe that art is a way of embracing our higher power. I use art as a way of conquering my mortal ambiguity. I let the canvas speak to me and then I open my heart and let all my fear go. The higher power inside me-through my mortal hands-uses the colors and the brush to let go of all my fear and anger and I am free.
Depends on the use. Self expression for most hobbyist artists, a living for some professional artists, and advertisement for other professional artists. Also, these boundaries tend to blur often enough.
art is an act of individual expression on the part of the creator and a bit of individual interpretation on receivers end. Arts give is and take. This is purpose of art right now. Given the right framework like words or letters that we all understand art is now what most call communication yet it is all still art

I think it is to express yourself, capture new ideas, to create new styles, be yourself and have fun! And when i draw it helps me relax. :) when u think you are not good at it, remember that everyone has a different way of art and expressing themselves. And its always good to draw, paint and many other things... including looking at art. :D
Please listen to the late, great Kurt Vonnegut: "Go into the arts. I'm not kidding. the arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something."
to show you're emotions and let other people see what you see what you see in you're mind.to express yourself and let you're mind turn into art.and most importantly to share you're creativity and talent.
Capturing a moment of perfection, even something bad in dance, song, food, canvas, sculpture, and revealing the way that artist experienced it is the purpose for its creation. The release of that creative energy should be appreciated, even if it is not understood or liked by the observer.
Art is a necessity. Advertising, Video Games, Architecture, Dancing,Novels, Movies, Music, Comics, Television shows, and a lot of other stuff too. Art isn't just painting or drawing, its creativity. Art makes life enjoyable and our minds are so complex we need to express it someway or we would go crazy. Other people's struggles and visions open our minds. Art brings a new perspective to things, it makes people look at things differently and communicate with one another.
what would i say is the underlying purpose of art,it is an arrogant self expression a "shaking a fist at GOD if you will, there can be no purpose of art, only to express the inner self, as to it being praise, nonsense, it is blasphemy at best, huh? duh? well sometimes, is art to uplift and educate,is it to distract to something higher?
