Totally free step by step instructions on how to refurbish light colored oak wood dressers

I need detailed information on how to refurbish light colored oak dressers and end tables for my bedroom they have many deep scratches. What grit sandpaper do I use do I sand it first? Do I have to stain and then put on a clear coat? Please help as this is my wife's suprise birthday gift.
