When two plates grind against each other very large amounts of heat and pressure are generated. As the plate movement continues, this pressure will eventually find its way to the surface together with molten rock which forms volcanoes. This topic can be found at http://www.platetectonics.com/.

The two plates that form the mid-atlantic ridge are slowly moving away from each other and releasing the magma that lies underneath (creating volcanos)
