Why, if there is a limit of 1200 spaces is not a count displayed as it is now, when making this question, so that we can waste our time?

I know nobody will believe this but some of my answers exceed the 1200 character mark. When that happens I copy and paste them into MS Word. There, if you click on the word count at the bottom of the page, it opens up a dialogue box that shows you how many characters are in it (both with and without spaces). From there it's easy to edit.

You'll quickly get the hang of staying within the 1200 and won't go over it very often.

Lol! Everyone can believe THAT, Dozy!

Before they imposed the 1200 limit we had about 1800. I even went over that a couple of times. :-(

Yes, now I start getting an uneasy feeling when my answers hover around 1200, even before pressing the button for the dreaded red "sorry" message...

Hi Virginia, As you know some questions need a detailed answer. Some need an impossibly long one (I saw one question yesterday, from somebody wanting us to write his college assignment, that would have taken thousands of words to answer)

They can't all be answered in a sentence or two.

Hi Dozy,
I do recall laughing at one of your answers to a similar question, and your beautiful new word "de-Dozify;" I actually do have a little hunch (perhaps a bit paranoid?) that maybe you - as well as I - may have helped inspire the new limit...

:-) That's altogether likely, Virginia. There aren't very many posts longer than that so I have to plead guilty. Reesinator came up with another wrinkle a few weeks ago by creating the adverb "dozily" when I described Himself as a "Celestial Bogeyman".

Oh...I did miss out on that response from the Reesinator...

It's not a waste - just copy and paste part of your answer into a comment or two. Piece of cake!

Hey Eric...me again, this time I've got an answer that's being held up by the censor monster...can you help it along, please? Thanks. ;)

Why, certainly... stand by, and I'll see who's minding the store.

Thanks for your answer, will do. Its not that I want 1200, just wanted to be able to monitor the count. Thanks.

Thanks Eric.

I've run into the same situation - a GREAT answer all typed out, and then "oops, too long!" So I've learned to copy the bottom half, post the top half and paste the bottom half into a comment. It's on my personal wish list to expand the 1200 character count thingy.

My goodness....If you have a question that consumes 1200 characters, then the answer might take a dissertation.
