How can anyone base their religious beliefs on a book with so many contradictions?

I know a great site that points out some obvious contradictions in the bible. After looking through the site a few times I can't understand how people can still think that the bible is true. Any of you religious types care to explain it to me?

Here are the pages I looked at.

The real question is, "why does anyone believe any religion!"
Every one of them is nothing but mythology and superstition. The key to having religion is that it normally has to be put to you when you are young. If someone told you everyday since you were little that faeries caused rain....every time it rained you would see proof of faeries.
If someone raises you to believe that a dubiously constructed book of fairy tales written by a bunch of superstitious desert dwellers is the flawless word of God...then that is also what you will believe.

And who said I was raised with religion? And it's not a book fairy tales. The bible is a historical document just like any other document. Under you mentality how can we even say that the constitution is real? What of some people on the 50s made it up. You wouldn't know the difference would you

I am surprised you didn't throw in some of the historical aspects of the debate Blasted... for instance that Constantine assembled a committee who assembled the bible. That they left out hundreds of books. That the Catholic church and European royalty edited the book repeatedly since it's compilation...

Have you read the bible? Didn't think so, it contains no contradictions. The bible is completely and wholly the word of God and has not a single contradiction. And simply saying it does, does not support your argument

god says, don't eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for in that day you shal surely die. the serpent says, no way, you'll become as god knowing both good and evil. and, when adam and eve eat of the tree, god says, look, adam and eve have become as me knowing both good and evil. do they die in that day? nnnnooooooo....

Not really a contradiction, but an epic fail from god and the serpent dings a level.

Well, I hope non-religious types can answer. I agree that it is full of contradictions and not only does it contradict itself, science has proven a great deal of what it says to be false. I think that it is possible that some of the events in the Bible happened, I think they were embellished, but that the book is a historical account of one family or tribe through out it's history.

I also think that religious people find ways to explain the contradictions or use the term "faith" to over ride those contradictions. I don't always think that there is anything wrong with this, to each his own, believe what you like, but please do not try to convert me.

What has proved to be false? Nothing. Science can prove nothing is false in the bible. And your ignorance is a bit offensive.
Report as
Paul perhaps try to debate things with out calling people names. Just because you believe in the Bible does not mean that I have the right to my own beliefs. One REALLY huge thing science has proven false is the age of the planet. According to the Bible the planet is not very old but science has proven it is millions of years old, not thousands as followers of the bible believe.

Dinosaurs DID exist, evolutions IS real.
Report as
Dinosaurs did exist and so does evolution. Yea a Christian said that. Bit that does my require a belief thy the world is millions of years old and the bible does not say how old the earth is. It is only a timeline of what happened at the beginning of the time it was compiled

Great points Vally, I'm basically just fishing for info and opinions with this. I have no spiritual beliefs myself, and I don't really understand how anyone can truly believe there is a God figure that created everything.

But I know that there are many intelligent educated people that do believe exactly that, and I'm hoping to get some insight into what makes them believe.

my friends what you have there books that were written by men over centuries and centuries. this book started as an original that was copied and copied and somebody added a mistake and somebody came behind him and corrected that mistake and added two of his own, someone came and copied it and skipped a line and added a line where it wasn't suppose to be, and then some else came and copied it and took it to his country in order for it to fit well with the doctrine they were teaching there...

after all these years you a have book that was compiled by men and still has men's finger print on it, so how could this be from God ??

Hahaha, it amuses me greatly to see how any relegious question just falls apart into a series of long arguements. Why can't people just say what makes them believe? There's got to be a reason, somewhere along the line something made you guys start believeing. What was it? What is it that keeps you coming back for more sermons and whatnot? How can you all just ignore all the contradictions?

im with you bremnants...XD

Ok Panther123, You have a respected answer. Nobody should tell you otherwise, despite the fact that we might believe differently.
Report as

Hullo BloodAngel, I'm not arguing with Panther's answer, I'm trying to find the reasoning behind it. Panther says that the bible is true and that no one can tell him/her otherwise. That is fine, I can respect that. But I'm trying to figure out how he/she came to believe so strongly. I've tried asking questions, I've read the bible cover to cover, last time I was in jail I even took part in a bible study group for something to do. But everything I look at or ask about just pushes me further away from it all. I can't figure out why it's not like that for everyone.
Report as
The Christian are programmed with the bible, they know it's filled with contradictions, false prophecies and unscientific errors but they don't seem to care about it. If you close your eyes and say I can't see the sun then that is your problem. This is what they are trying to shove down our throat and bremnant is reversing it and shoving it back in their throat.

Report as
BlastedRemnants
Whoah! That's not exactly what I'm doing Momo. This is more of an info run, know what I mean? I'm just asking about the reasons people have for ignoring the contradictions and inconsistincies scattered all throughout the bible. I'm not trying to change any minds, just trying to understand them.
Report as
I (guy) believe in the bible because i think its true. Its as simple as that. Thats just what i believe so im not trying to say that anyone elses religion is wrong or anything, im just saying that i believe in God and jesus.
Report as
And i ignor the contradictions because niether God nor Jesus has said any of those things. The people prophesising the end of the world and stuff like that are just trying to draw attention to people to their religion. Nothing Jesus said in the Bible has been a lie
Report as
Jhamilton918
That is true...lying and being wrong are two different things. He wasn't lying as much as he was just wrong.

When Christians say that the world is only 5000 years old, men can live in the belly of whales, virgins can give birth, humanity can start with only two sets of DNA, and rape, slavery, and murder are all OK if God says they are.....they aren't lying. They are just wrong!

Thank you for pointing at that distinction.
Report as
God never said that rape slavery or murder is ok. U are wrong. If your going to preach to all of us that God isnt real that at least get your facts straight. And those stories from the bible are all symbolic. Its not literal. Anyone with common scense would perceive that. No offense...
Report as
The saying that God created the earth in seven days was also symbolic so that last comment about how we think the world is 5000 years old is false...again.

Hi BlastedR,
Well as you know I am one of those religious types, so maybe I could offer my 2 cents here...

The splendor of the human spirit cannot be contained in words... which is why the Bible (as well as other holy books) just doesn't cut it with logic. But images, symbols - those can act as transformers to connect us in with who we really are. And so the Bible conveys its message in imagery.

Something like lightning is too powerful, but take a power line with transformers and you can switch on your electric lights not to mention your metal...well, the human spirit is the lightning here - too great for the logical mind to contain.

Anyway as an example from your website, the "wealth and riches" in the house of one who 'fears' the Lord Ps. 112:1-3, that refers to an unconditional sense of inner abundance irregardless of whether you are rich or poor. And by contrast, the rich man who cannot get that camel to go through the eye of the needle... well, that rich guy has to spend so much energy on his money that you really have no energy left over to explore your own inner abundance!

Likewise with each of those contradictory pairs...when you look deeper they are always consistent, no contradiction at all.

In any case, religion was never meant to INSTRUCT us in salvation, it was intended to support and nurture our own inner knowing. And I hate to tell you this but some of you 'atheist types' here on Ask I think do seem to be coming along quite beautifully in unfolding the love in your hearts, which to me is what religion (not to mention life) is all about...

Thanks for the input BloodAngel. I'm not trying to drag anyone's religion through the mud (today), I'm more just trying to understand how people can blindly accept that the bible is true. I've read a lot of stuff that points out many different inconsistencies in the bible and I don't understand how a thing can be true and false at the same time. It seems strange to me that nobody with faith seems at all bothered by it either.

I can't give a god any respect that requires mere mortals to do his killing for him. That counts out [...thinking...] Oh yah! All of them! My god (and he ain't showed up yet, zackly) kills his own enemies, cuz he's all kinda powerful.

Then, I'm going for a god that thinks killing is bad. Yah I know, just a crazy kid with a dream

In the stories Thor had no trouble taking care of his own dirty work, plus he'd actually show up, in person, if he felt like it. I'm going to try praying to Thor next time I'm stuck in line at the grocery store, waiting for some nice old lady to find the exact change in her 10 gallon purse. A little Mjolnir goes a long way.
