Should parents have the right to read their kids' text messages?

let me know what u think. there is a proposed bill in arizona that could make this legal for parents to be able to access our phone records. currently parents need a court order to do such a thing.

Report as

Yes,your parents just wants to make sure you're not texting to some random strangers and they care for your safety.

you don't need a court order. well not in my area at least. i think parents should only do that if they think they have a good reason for it.

I think it depends on how old the kid is, and if the parents has a good reason.

all kids under 18 are subject to parental oversight

I think they have the right. but us kids need our privacy also!
They should only check if they think something is going on in their kids life that is not correct or appropriate.

Well if the parents has a good reason for that or I may say they just want to check to make sure you are safe, because they love you, AND still your live with them , it's not your house, it's your parents house, so I say still they have the right or if you want your right move out

Parents are only trying to keep you safe and to make sure you are not getting yourself in trouble. Parents don't really care about the kid stuff that is being said . But if you don't want then looking it probably means you are talking about stuff you know you shouldn't be.

If your parents pay for the phone than yes your parents should just be able to grab it right out your hands. My parents did. Embaressed me like no other. Ugh! Lol

The government reads your text messages AND their's so it really dosent matter anyways. If you're concerned about it buy a prepaid phone and make sure they don't find out about it.

sometimes the kids pay the bill i have to pay my own bill
Report as
That's great that you take on that sort of responsibility. Although it is awesome to do pay your own bill , parents are the responsible for their kids until age 18. This alone should give them the right to read text messages(not that they should all the time)

This is a tough call. I'm going to side with krista1994 and RBBDDB23. There's the line of privacy and the line of good parenting. Depending on the nature of the kid and age, kinda like what RB said. I would lean more toward "yes" if this kid was showing More than usual Bizarre behavior and hanging with some wierd group. I would say "no" and give all kids the benefit of the doubt so they know you trust their judgement. I could go back and forth w/this as all of you could. But, they do have that right because they are responsible for that child until 18 years of age in my state.. especially if they are paying the phone bill. Don't do it if you don't feel it necessary and you are just being nosy. Yes if the kid is in need of guidance and help picking his/her "crowd." Take Care of each other and have a great day!

That is in all U.S. states. It is a federal law, not a state law.

I thought so, but didn't want to overstep my boundry. I don't have kids, but I was one once and I definiately have parents ! YeAA! Whom I care about very much. But when I was this age I had a very different opinion of them! :) Thanks for catching that 18 years old statement! Happy! Have a great day!

I have raised 3 children that are now in their 20's and mostly before cell phones were around, but as for me; I think as long as the parent is paying the bill AND the child is still in high school or is high school age, then the parents should have every right to read anything on the phone. I also agree that a parent shouldn't do it just to be nosey but if they feel there is good reason to do so.

I don't think anything is off limits if it's under the parent's roof and they pay the bill, but this is a case by case situation. If the parent has no reason to snoop, in other words, the texter has no past history of trouble, then it's an invasion of privacy..If not,,it may be the only way to find out what is going on. Plus all the sexting, pics being sent, inappropriate videos etc, it has many parents paranoid. If no reason, don't look for one, respecting privacy is important to everyone.,

It depends on the age, to me. If they are under 15, or immature, or BOTH. You most definitely should have the right to check their text messages. Also, a lot of bullying happens over text messages, so if your child has done something like that, then MOST DEFINITELY. If you have the Verizon phone service you can read every text your child sends online (If you can't get a hold of your child's phone, or don't want them to know, etc.). Other than that I think that your children should have privacy with their texts, but if you don't trust your kids make sure they give you their lock code if they have one, and check their texts when they just leave their phone laying around, or take it from them at an unexpected time and check their texts. It sounds rude and like an invasion of privacy, but as parents you need to make sure your child is doing the right thing.

no parents should trust their kids. my parents actually take my phone then check it. i just got it checked and i had to delete 48 messages. because i like this boy and my friend gave me his cell # and i text him like everyday (i try to) and he tells me personal stuff because we trust each other. he wouldn't want to tell me but i remind him of something he had sent me.
i wouldn't be allowed to say anything about it or talk about it in public. maybe if they are under 10 yes

anyways why shouldnt they unless the kids are trying to hide something then they should

If the kid has acted I'm a way that his/her parents can trust them they won't need to. However I think a parent has every right to "parent" their child. If that means checking up on them by reading their text messages and looking at their facebook page to know who their child is socializing with then so be it.

Yeah, if they are taking care of you. I mean if your like 18+ or paying them rent then... No. Or if you paid for your phone and you pay the bill. But if your like 14 then they have every right to. Not for them to be nosey, but to make sure you aren't "sexting" or something, ya know?

I believe that they should. They are your parents. They are your MOTHER AND FATHER. They have every right to check your phone. But it mostly depends on the parent or family. Different family's have different rules and regulations.

Before ANYONE uses a phone or a computer, they should know that anyone can read or see what he or she did on that piece of technology. If the child is doing strange or inappropriate things, then the parent has every right to look at their son or daughter's text messages. Although if the child is not doing anything bad, then the parent should keep the messages private.
