Is it better to use an attorney or accountant for IRS tax lien issues?

A lien has been placed on my house and the IRS is accepting monthly payments from me. I'd like to have it wiped clean, as advertised in the many mailings I am receiving, but don't know which option is the best.

As long as they have "tax" before their title, either should be able to help you. Just a regular attorney or accountant should refer you to a tax attorney/tax accountant.

The person to use in a case like this is the attorney general. With an attorney, the client is encouraged to disclose all relevant information to them. If a client discloses all information to the attorney, the attorney can offer better advice and will likely be able to represent the client in a more effective manner. This kind of option is not available with an accountant.

If you're already in a payment plan, and you can afford those payments, beware the mailers. If you are in a payment plan that you know will fail, it may be time to get help. However, I would not hire anyone who advertises on TV or via mail. Seek a specialist, not someone with "tax" before their title.
