My 3 year old refuses food. please help

my 3 year old granddaughter choked on a hotdog we all freaked out now she refuses any solid food no matter how tiny. she cries she is hungry but only drinks, liquids. we are giving everyting we can but if it has the tinyest bet of texture she spits it out or wont open her mouth. we took her to the doctor and she said to offer good food. but she wont eat good or junk not even candy. its like its a mental thing. she said she is scared it will hurt and she will choke. she has lost 4 oz last week and we are going on week 3 now. im getting worried. any help would be appreceated.

She's scared and that's understandable. I don't think at the age of three she needs a psychiatrist. She will listen to you or another family member before she'll ever listen to a stranger.

One thing that I can think of that you can try is; let her watch you eat a little bite of something, pretend it choked you, just for a second though. Any longer than that will make her worse than she already is. Real quick say, oh, i'm okay, I just swallowed wrong and i'll remember next time to swallow the right way. Then take another bite real slow, chew it up, and say, oh yes i'm okay, I got a little scared but i'm not now. Tell her we all choke once and we get scared but then we're okay!

That's nothing different than a psychiatrist will do, only she knows you, and not the doctor. She's only three, she's going to believe you over any doctor.

You can make her some mashed potatoes, but use the instant one's where there won't be any lumps in them. Make her some gravy. Give her canned carrots because they are usually soft, and mash them up, the same with some other foods too. If anyone gives her another hotdog before she five years old, make sure they cut it in tiny pieces, than mash each piece with a fork first. There are lots of healthy food item's that are good for her that you can mash up, and each time mash the food less and less.

I have always hated to see people give little ones hotdogs, because they always suck on them before and as they start to bite into one.
One of my sister-in-laws gave her son a cold hotdog every morning, and anytime he was hungry, because she was to lazy to feed him. He choked many times but it didn't bother her. Yes, you guessed it; I can't stand her!

Good luck with her!

i agree about the hotdog. they were cut into 1/4 peaces and she still choked. not really bad either. but the way we all reacted was not good. she was already really sick with a sore throat and that is part of this too. she thinks it will hurt to swollow not just the choking. but i will work on all you suggested. thank you for your time

Yes,I think it is the mind of the child that keeps her from eating any food, and it is very hard to convince your baby to eat.Why don't you try first to play with her, something that she will really have fun,in that way she will forget and will try to eat food, you can also bring your granddaughter to a psychiatrist or pediatrician maybe they can also help you.

It looks like she has developed a fear of solid food cuz of what happened to her. I suggest psychiatric help or showing her that theres nothing to be afraid of.

Try applesauce or broths and slowly introduce her to solid foods again, It is her fear that is keeping her from eating, but you can't force her. You can also get her some Boost, Carnation Instant Breakfast, and look in the infants food department they have some other things you can try to at least get some nutrition into her in the meantime.

Hot dogs are the nemesis for kids.
It is constantly stressed by pediatricians that any food like hot dogs and grapes should be skinless and cut smaller than the size of a dime. (the size of the child's esophagus)
As far as getting your child to eat maybe it's best not to panic and just grind food and make a soup for now. She'll come around soon!
