Do you know anything about Horatio Alger's The American Dream AND The Great Gatsby? Please help!!

For the book "The Great Gatsby" I have to write an essay about the American Dream. The thesis statement is: Great Gatsby demonstrates that Horatio Alger's American Dream is a nightmare. I think i know why.. It's because everything is about money, appearance, etc. But I don't know how to explain this in a one paragraph essay. Can you please help? My English teacher explained nothing to the whole class about Horatio Alger/ The American Dream. Thanks

Horatio Alger's novels focused on the American Dream. However in his version, rags to riches happened and the bad guy always lost out in the end. The good guy was rewarded for his hard work with riches and was treated well, gained prestige. The Great Gatsby on the other hand differs. Gatsby selects his home and throws lavish parties. His library is full of books he has never read. They are classic books so people will see them and think he is cultured. Great Gatsby also deals with new and old money. No longer are people content to work and hope for a reward. They are consumed with the desire for money power and status in Gatsby.
