I see people dance for entertainment in NY and then they pass a bucket around when there's a big crowns and they get money.

Unfortunately yes. People who are caring and giving are taken advantage of from the people standing on the corner with signs. There's that and the ever so popular hooker!

Some people do make a living by "busking" (buskers are street entertainers). But, unless you're very talented, and can grab and hold on to an audience quickly and often, you won't be able to do so--and a sense of humor is vital in the busking trade.
