Keep checking craigslist and your local paper.
Try freecycle.. some freecycle groups do not allow the posting of animals, but some do.
Do keep in mind that some "rehoming fees" may be there to help recoup costs. Its not unreasonable to ask $50-100 for a puppy that is vaccinated and wormed- you would have had to pay this to get first shots otherwise. I wouldnt pay for a puppy that doesnt have shots

Sorry to tell you this but almost nothing is free these days. Only way to get lucky is if some one is really desperate to get rid of their puppy.

Hiya SteelersGirl!

Have you looked through www.petfinders.com. They have a classifieds section that you can search in your area.

Good luck! :-D

On the street, in a box... in the dumpster... behind a McDonald's... on a Monday. The answer to your question is, it'll be VERY unlucky to find a free puppy. If you do, let me know. I really want a puppy.

There is no such thing as a free puppy. That puppy is going to need food, and medical care, and vaccinations, and licenses... it's a huge responsibility that should be thought through completely and rationally. If you can't afford a $50 adoption fee at a pound, you can't afford a puppy.

Ask all your friends and extended family members, people you work with, and everyone you meet/see. Someone knows someone who's dog had puppies they are desperate to find a home for. You can look in the local paper under pets. Put up ads @ the local grocery stores and credit unions. Hopefully, someone will help.

You still need to pay for the cost of the dog's upkeep prior to adoption.

First off, probably good to get established in your living situation first. Apartments are not the best set up for dogs, especially a puppy. Too many people take on the idea of being a pet owner without grasping the full responsibility of it. Thats why you'll find tons of free dogs in the shelters. Maybe you could even find a puppy-- but understand that the cute little puppy stage only lasts a few months. Even if you get it for free what about neutering, heart worm meds and other vet bills. What about dog food and the expense as a dog ages. Assuming you are wanting to give a dog a forever home not just while he's a cute little puppy.

Agree, too many people get tired of them after they have gotten past the puppy stage or don't take them to the vet when they need it.
Report as
Well Im sorry but Im NOT like that.. Im an animal lover.. I actually keep my animals and take them to the vet when they need it.. all my money is going to the apartment what do you expect? And plus ii already have everything it needs.
Report as
If you cannot afford the fee you cannot afford the dog. Vet visits can cost $500 or more sometimes.

This was 9 months. Guess I just proved everything wrong on here. But pretty sure the puppy i got 9 months ago. :) Is still alive and healthy .. and she is my best friend.. And Jasmine (My dog) Is going on 10 months old. She is the best dog ever and she gets whatever she wants.

Only way to get one FREE is for a neighbor's dog to have puppies and one wanders onto your doorstep,
I would still recommend the pound. You can find some of the best animals there. Don't just settle on a puppy either. Some older dogs are good too. They are calmer and easier to train and getting one from a pound is great because they KNOW where they were and will love you for getting them out of there.

You are so right about them remembering where they were.

Rarely will you. I suggest you start saving money and get one from a shelter. Even if you did get a free puppy from someplace you would still be paying just as much as a shelter dog with all the shots and spaying/neutering. So my advice go to a shelter, because those animals are in danger and you would still end up paying the money anyway for a dog UTD on shots and spayed/neutered, while that's why there is an adoption fee at the shelter

Puppies are not free! They need shots, heart worm prevention, vet visits, food, grooming, toys, beds, leash, collar etc... You might wanna reconsider until you can afford it!

If you are getting a pet please wait until you have enough money to take care of a dog. You must get it puppy shots. A new dog comes with unexpected costs.

If you can afford the care and you just want a free puppy, try an animal shelter or the SPCA, sometimes they drop the adoption fee with rescue dogs..

If getting a puppy causes a problem with your finances .. then PLEASE DON'T GET ONE! A pet is a long term commitment .. and they are creatures that need to be fed (good quality food), they get sick, and they need toys and they do damage. All of which cost .. guess what ... MONEY! If you can't afford to care for a pet .. please don't.

Getting a pet should be more about what YOU can do for IT .. Not the other way around.

Why the hell do all you people think im not gonna take care of it? Ok if I wasnt gonna take care of one i wouldnt get one.
Report as
I didn't say anything about your intention .. I was referring to your financial ability. I don't know how both are matched .. I was just pleading for your to consider that you need both elements.
Report as
We don't think that you can afford it if you cannot afford to buy the dog. Caring for the dog costs more than the dog.

Medicene, collar, leash, food, license, and most of all .. Love. And I would never let anything happen to her. She is almost 10 months old now. And Im the one thats been taking of her.

Some shelters give pets for free, or they have monthly specials, like free, 50% off, 2 for one. Shelters though, with no special, they can range from $90- $120 (depending on the age and how long it has been at the shelter) and they give things with the pet. They include shots up to date, spay/ neutered, microchip, id tag, collar, leash, a bag of food, a care instruction book and care instructions dvd

Even shelters will require some sort of assurance that the animal will be placed in a home where it will be cared for properly long term. If a person doens't have the financial means, their application will be turned down.
