How about a picture of a fat, gluttenous roman man in a toga and dripping with jewelry sitting at a table that is crumbling and about to break under the weight of the food and treasure piled on top and a Mongolian warrior on horseback obviously about to attack, lance raised or something.

The best way to act is by first mastering the whole story, get to understand the characters and then come up with steps of how to demonstrate it. This non-fiction history book is written by English historian Edward Gibbon and it is published in six volumes.

Can't you just get one of those famous paintings about Rome and use that?

Paint the Emporor Nero playing violin, with Rome on fire in the background.
