What causes sharp pain on side of ribs?

Sometimes when I take a deep breath I will get a sharp stabbing pain in the side of my ribs. the pain will last anywhere from a few seconds to a few min. Causing me to only be able to take short shallow breaths till it passes cause the sharp stabbing pain hurts to much to try to take a deep breath? Does anyone know what causes this?

A sharp pain on side of ribs especially when you take a deep breath can be caused by a problem in the muscles, including the ribs, the cartilage or nerves serving those areas. It can also be the lining of the chest wall so that whenever it is touched you feel the pain. You could also be having acid problem and to determine the problem, a chest x-ray is important.

Arthritis, broken rib, and pulled muscle are the most common causes for this particular type of rib pain. I had the rib cartilage inflammation called costochondritis which caused pain similiar to what you are describing.
