I was shocked at the greed of hoarders. I will not pay highway robbers prices I will find a substitute but not from Wal-Mart I won't take a chance on anything that might be produced in China since they do not care what they put in stuff. My cat died from their animal food filler. Fred Meyer has a product that is comparable but does not mix well like Benefiber in cold products. Wow what a scarcity issue they have.

I too could not find this in stores and asked the pharmacist what the deal was and she said there was a recall. I read on another site the company that makes benefiber (Novartis) had a recall on a few different items it manufactures (aspirin etc.) because of packaging problems and benefiber was not part of the recall, but benefiber is made in the same plant that makes the other items and is now shut own. This means no new supplies of benefiber till the packaging problem is fixed. The other site said mid year so grab some off amazon if you can.
I could not find it for weeks in the Chicago area either. Only the powder. I found tablers and stuff, but I use the powder. I am pregnant and this has been my only solution for constipation so far. I found only one the other day finally, and got it. I got sick teh day after with stomach flu. Now I wonder if it was related. Having another glass now-- should I?? I decided to check online before I drink it all. I cannot find anything yet on a recall.
I too have had trouble purchasing it. I did find a couple of boxes ( I like the stick packs, not the orange ones) a couple of weeks ago at Walgreen and bought the last ones, then today bought the last one on the shelf. They said it is not a standard shelf item so they don't keep a regular restock list. I have a 92 year old mother that loves this and hates to spoon it out of the canister. Please don't discontinue this product.

A pharmacist at Sam's Club in Omaha said Novartis has not been producing Benefiber. She thinks they will produce it once they clear up problems they had with plant issues and other products. The Lincoln Novartis plant has laid off many employees and are running only a couple of products.
Keep looking in your mom and pop shops and stores that are not in a high traffic area, they may have some on the shelf's. I found six boxes at a rite aid that is in a low traffic area, they have three more boxes and I may just run and grab them.
I called the customer service line to verify what previous people have said but just got the run-a-round. I just wanted confirmation that they will begin production again at some point and if they could give me a rough time frame as to when they might be able to supply stores again. She would or could not verify any info or give any time frame. I told her that the only place to find the Benefiber was online and that some unscrupulous hoarders were trying to sell the 190 serving size containers for $80 to $100 a bottle (Costco retail is $20.) To which she reassured me that if I did find any supplies of Benefober that it was safe to take and not part of the recall, though that was not the question I had asked her. I know she just answers the phones but why not just say she didn't know when production would begin again? Why be so evasive about something so benign as Fiber? I guess I'm being paranoid. But.....
I highly recommend Arbonne Daily Fiber Boost. You can order it online and it is a 30 day supply. Completely tasteless and gluten free. I add it to my protein shakes and my husband takes it in his oj. You can order it at www.arbonne.com Arbonne also offers a preferred client membership that gets you 20% off every purchase. You can use the sponsor id# 19254622 if your want to check out the fiber. Also, Arbonne gives you a 45 day money back guarantee so if you do not like the fiber you can return it.
I have used the powder benefiber for a couple of years now and suddenly I cannot find it in stores. Jewel, Walgreens, CVS, drugstore.com, walgreens.com, none of these have it in stock. Amazon has it, however, they are charges more than 3 times what Jewel was selling it for. I would get the 62 servings for $11.95; amazone was $37.95. That's outrageous. I really like the benefiber and not sure I want to switch to a different product. Anyone know what happened? Or anyone know where to purchase it at a reasonable price?
It is now unavailable except in very limited quantities for exorbitant prices -- what used to cost $12-14 is now $50 and up. Novartis seems to be in big trouble all the way around. Some other producer should be stepping in to make comparable product available, but not seeing it. Only Metamucil gritty, sickly-flavored clones. Waiting for the market to fix this, but a lot of people are very unhappy about all the Novartis discontinuations of this and much more serious medications.
Sherry from South Carolina: DON'T GET EQUATE from Walmart....It Will NOT Dissolve even in Hot liquid...Horrible!!! We are desperate here in South Carolina as well BUT will NOT be Duped into Buying from ANYONE Who is Price Gouging!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad I found this site!! I have a 16 year old cat with constipation issues (among several). I was giving her a product called lactose which has the consistency of honey and she wouldn't eat it in her food. This left me giving it to her in a syringe. It would end up on the floor and her, very hard to get of her fur. I read that cats can be given fiber, which I confirmed with her vet. I had been giving her Benefiber in a her food about 2 years now and it works perfectly! Dissolves quickly, orderless and tasteless. Since I haven't been able to find it I have been using the Metamucil Clear & Natural powder. It does not work well enough, at least for her, and she's not going as often and when she does it's very little. And it will often leave a white film at the bottom of her dish. We have several of the stores mentioned here and I will try them.
I live in NJ and can't find it either but I did purchase a similar product in Walmart that said, "compare to Benefiber". I dissolve it in my morning cup of tea and it does dissolve and works the same as Benefiber for me.
I haven't been able to find any Benefiber in South Florida either. BJ's Club, Walmart, CVS, or Waagreens and no one could tell me why. It's the only product that worked for my elderly parents. Thanks for info.
I was just told yesterday by my daughters pediatric gastroenterologist that the FDA recalled it a little while ago due to some advertising/label issue. It will be back but not sure when. It was not due to any problem with the medication itself. Too bad, because it is the one that is highly recommended for her to use! Good luck everyone....I'll wait patiently!
Novartis mfg. says its Lincoln, Nebraska facility which manufactures Benefiber is undergoing maintenance and has had to temporarily suspend production, expects to resolve the shortage soon. Per Novartis Website - www.benefiber.com
I contracted a form of colitis just after taking Benefiber (the strawberry kiwi envelopes you mix in water), not even hearing about this recall until now! I thought I was dying, had to go to the emergency room from being in excruciating pain for a whole week! No disease was found, so my guess is Benefiber. Nice to let us know that this product had been recalled - I have been in limbo wondering how I got this. Well, now I think I know!
Don't think you can get colitis from drinking something, but i'll digress..... My son really likes the orange Benefiber, and needs it as he has A VERY TIGHT BOWEL ISSUE. It seems like the orange wheat dextrin formula should be produced by other manufacturers, but i can find nothing..... recently I purchased 4 bottles for a total cost of 72 dollars on ebay...... was hoping that would last until it was back in the market, seems now like it wont.. The benefiber powder is actually made in France according to another site.... only packaged in nebraska for retail sales.
I found Clear Fiber At PUBLIX Grocery Store Ingredients (Wheat Dextrin ) non thicking powder , sugar free ,Flavor free ,Dissolves Completely in Beverage and soft foods . okay I live in Florida and this was $9.99 for 62 servings 8.6 oz hope this helps out the Florida People
Costco and Wal-Mart have poor substitutes. They are sticky when damp and that can translate to sticky output. Spouse is very unhappy with the substitutes; i don't like them but they are better than nothing.

I bought the Metamucil brand which they have now made in a bottle that resembles the same shape as benefiber and it does dissolve well but it just doesn't work. Been taking it for over a week and nothing :( Wish they would get benefiber back on the market.
there are two versions of benefiber, the older one is guar gum, which is still available generically. at least our wholesaler still has it, the newer one has wheat dextrin, i AM not totally sure of whats going on, Ask your pharmacist to try and order the generic version, which ever is available. Try an independant pharmacy, they usually are more cooperative.
The manufacturer of the Wal-Mart Wheat Dextrin and the Benefiber are the same one in France. I talked to customer service and they gave me the total run around. The recall was a over a year ago - what is up? I think they are never going to make it again. The Wal-mart one is fairly the same, so we are stuck with it. Sorry.
"...Another job to finish: Consumer health manufacturing upgrades. The company's 2012 results suffered from problems at a consumer health plant in Nebraska, which had to stop production after FDA found manufacturing violations there. Multiple products--including Excedrin, NoDoz, Maalox, Benefiber and Theraflu -- were recalled. Fixes have taken longer than initially expected, and though Novartis has managed to turn out some consumer brands elsewhere, many products remain missing from store shelves. [Novartis CEO Joe Jimenez] has stopped predicting when, exactly, that plant will be back up to full speed."
Why is it taking so long to get this plant back in operation? Heads would have rolled long ago had this been in just about any other industry.

Had an old hermetically-sealed sample I used, it worked OK with one dose. But watch out for that 3x a day usage - it's a bit much, suffered with upper-intestine pain for about 12 hours, BM too runny. Actually takes about 24 hours to work. I'd start with maybe 1 tsp. in AM, and 1 tsp. PM, see how it goes. Walgreen's has "Clear Soluble Fiber Powder) dextrin, says compare to Benefiber. About $15 for 16.7 oz, 125 servings. Found it 2/21/13. Dissolves well. Says made in USA.
WOW, Thanks so much for all the answers--we've looked and looked for over a year and I too bought the packets on clearance at Walmart. We now use the Walmart 'benefiber' however are bummed about the packets as we do a lot of traveling and cruises. It was always so nice to go to breakfast and add the packet to our juice. Rite-aid had little tiny pill-sized plastic (think miniature ziplock) bags on sale so I guess my next trip will have me filling the individual packets for hubby and myself--a lot of trouble but worth it.
You can buy the equivalent of Benefiber called Fiberrific. It is sold in select Wal-Mart stores in Canada in the diabetic section. It is 97% pure fiber from chicory root.. It is also sold through the Loblaws Supermarkets and their subsidiary stores.(Canada) You can call 1-800-887-6009 the manufacturer or visit www.fiberrific.com
There is a better fiber product line widely available called Fiberrific. It has no taste, doesn't thicken and is higher in fiber than any other supplement (97% fiber!). They have it plain, with added probiotics (better immunity), with added digestive enzymes (better digestion), added vitamin D (prevent disease) and added B vitamins (for heart health). The products are all vegan, kosher and government approved. They are available at most health stores in Canada, Loblaws stores (natural section), Wal-Mart (diabetes section) and online from Well.ca, Bestbuy.ca and Aviva.ca For more info you can visit their site Fiberrific.com
