How do I get over my fear of performing in front of people?

I have an intense dance concert coming up, and we are doing hip hop, which is fine for me, but I am in the front and we are doing a modern routine. I don't want to be nervous in front of my family and all other 80 people.

Depending on how many days weeks or months away it is I would say every couple of days: start off small with some friends in the stands and then grow that way it could feel like the actual audience

Yeah thanks. I actually walk up to my friends doing my short routine because it's fun! Haha it's just my family that I'm worried about performing in front of

Yeah I get a burst of energy, but there is only about 16 of us on stage at the time, and I am in the front. My problem is that there is a slow hip hop part, like we hit an accent fast, then go slow. And I have a girl partner, and it gets touchy.

Just don't think about it and just worry about your routine or whatever you're doing. I know the feeling I am always upfront because I'm short and I just don't think about and do what I suppose to do. You'll be fine, I promise

I get nervous sometimes in front of large groups but once you get up there its not so bad. Most likely it wont bother you when you get up there and if it does just focus on the routine not the people.
Also talk to other people about to do the routine and i guarantee they are just as nervous as you.

You need to be sure that you are really prepared and really good . Even memorize your speech/dance and tell/show it to your self few times. If you know that you are well prepared, you will worry less.

I hear you!! I used to speak in front of people for a living, and I still get nervous sometimes! So, I just remember that it's OK to be nervous, but then I focus on the task at hand and once I "get into it" I forget I'm nervous and everything always goes well :)

do everything exactly the same as when your practicing. and remember that none of them have seen it before so whatever you do. that is how the show/dance was meant to go.

What i find helps is picturing the audience on the toilet, try not to laugh obviously but it certainly takes the pressure off, have humility , it helps a lot if you stumble in a speech and you make the crowd laugh at how "stupid" you are... hope this helps

Just try to get lost in the music and the dance and you won't even realize your in front of people! The more you do it the less nervous you'll be in the future! Good luck ;)

If you are on a stage with stage lights you will hardly be able to see them. If you know the dance well you have nothing to worry about.

Just make believe you are alone and in your room and try looking at the ceiling or focus on an object and just enjoy yourself.

When I was into acting, I would walk up to random (friendly looking) people and ask them if I could practice my monologue in front of them. It helped because I didn't know them and didn't care what they thought. After a few tries, it became much easier to perform in front of people. Maybe you can do something like this with a brief part of your dance routine. Good luck!

I'd like to advice you to be involved in a group of ten pupils and tell yourself that today you are taking the lead. Then you introduce a certain topic in which you are going to debate about and make sure they feel your presence. Don't be shy "just do it" they said. Be free.

It's impossible to overcome stage fright but good ways to use it to your advantage are to ignore the audience, but still be sure to make eye contact. You can also try to control your breathing and be especially careful not to do any nervous twitches. Also while most people think that it is best to have the entire speech written on paper in front of you the best thing to have is just a brief outline and fill in the rest with your own conversational words. This reduces stage fright and gives a better impact on the audience while spontaneously improving your eye contact.

Find an improv course and take it. There are improv games for beginners designed specifically to reprogram your fear response. Besides, improv is a gas. You end up spending much of your time laughing.

Plan for the the unexpected. Check toastmasters website to find tricks on dealing with common unexpected situations. They have ways to reverse awkward moments & make yourself look witty at the same time. For example: What will you do if the lights go out? Announce: "It's OK everybody, I do my best work in the dark."

I would start out dancing in front of people that are closer to me. Like Family or a best friend or something like that. & then keep going until you get comfortable enough to go in front of a crowd.

When I have a solo in choir, it helps to think about who I most want to make proud. Don't think about all the other people, just imagine that that one person is out there smiling at you, loving every moment of seeing you shine. Remember - This is your moment.

don't try to focus on people. A lot of people will say to picture them in their underwear, that does not work, the
last thing that you need is to be laughing or blushing in front of the crowd

That's easy... just ask your friends to come to your house have them sit down then close your eyes and pretend your alone and sing your favorite song and once your done the first time do it a second time with your eyes open and keep closing your eyes and pretending your alone until you get used to it

Well it can take you sometime, but face the audience as if its not even there. And to practice it you must do the rehearsal infront of your friends and family, and practising while standing infront of the mirror would be great. You need to be strong and confident about yourself and then just relax, don't even consider it as a big deal :)
