Actually more than likely what mercifulwine is looking for is the number of major studio theater releases since about 1927, in which case Tony857 is correct it is in fact about 25,000. To Lewiscarnelian point though, it is a very arbitrary number. I have a collection of over 4,000 movies, that I thought were major studio theater releases, yet when I attempt to match against the appx. 25,000, about 1 in every 25-50 is not on the list. In other words they are direct to DVD, direct to TV, film festival, bollywood, etc... If you are looking to collect them all, forget it, I have been at this for 15 years. They are now releasing about 1,000 major releases per year, you'd never be able to keep up.
There is no absolute count for how many movies have ever been made. They would number into the millions. Movies have been made for over a century and not all of them were picked up by a big movie studio. There are thousands of entries to the Sundance Film Festival every year by amateurs.
About 25,000. Wikipedia has a page that list movies released by year, but it is incomplete. It will at least give you a starting point. There are also many movie web sites that list moves released by year. The last 25 years there have been about 750 movies released every year.
tony857 is incorrect. Bollywood alone releases 950 feature length films each year. IMDB lists 1,764,727 including TV since 1898.. that's probably closer but there would be loads more unreleased etc. Hope this helps.
your all infact wrong to the original question.. an to get this far off you would think you might try to find the facts an really figure it out..you all have bits of truth but not really adding it all up right...but the first film was made almost 140yrs ago someone mentioned sundance besides sundance you have almost 200 other fest in the us alone. But im just gonna take a guess like the sheep...3,450,419
