It depends.

Actually lately, with the 6,7 and 8 speed automatics and CVT's the automatics get better mileage than the manual shift cars.

The past couple of years reverse the way it used to be. It is basically all about computer management of the systems and technological advances.

Go to www.edmunds.com or www.autoweek.com and you will see all the new generation cars are this way.

Manual transmission is better on gas than the automatic transmission this is because vehicles with manual transmission have a smaller engine that can dedicate more power to the power train and another advantage of the manual transmission is that if you know how to work on cars you can do some small repairs.

Manual transmission have been found to improve gas mileage by two to five miles per gallon when compared with an automatic transmission in the same model car. Keep in mind you may be able to improve your mpg over the manual by going with an automatic in a different model car.
