Why are blue eyes so sensitive to light?

my eyes are blue (if u cant tell from my picture) and my eye doctor said that I don't need to go outside without sunglasses because blue eyes are really sensitive so why are blue eyes so sensitive ??

Report as

Because there is not as much melanin in it to "protect it". kinda of like why lighter skinned people get more burned when they are in the sun compared to darker skinned people.

O lol okay thank you and that explains why I get burn a lot 2 haha
Report as
haha. You're welcome. (:

woah i had no idea blue eyes were more sensative :O explains a lot.... lol
Report as
Ya it does depend on your eye color because the lighter the eye the less its going to provide more "shade" for your inner eye,but i have to disagree on the skin part because i have really pale skin like a porcelain doll, and i dont sunburn very easily, i can stay in the sun for hours on end and my skin just will not burn, while i can see other people who are way darker than i am getting the worst sunburns, ithink when it comes to skin, its not so much about the amount of melanin, its how resilient your skin is to the sunlight, apparently mine can take alot more sunlight than most others.
Report as
But anyway ya for sum people thats just how it is,i have always wanted blue eyes because i have hazel/brown eyes, they look really dark when you look at them but boy when they are in the sunlight, i kid you not they look golden with a little hint of brown and green.i still think blue eyes are more exotic looking though.lol
Report as
Oh and sorry im posting so much but i heard that this year some scientists or whatever theu are are going to release a serum that costs a fortune, but anyway what they do is inject your eye with the color that you want, and within a year your eye will permanetely change color....wouldnt that be cool to just inject one eye so that you would have like a brown eye and a blue eye, that would be soo freakishly exotic and beautiful.
Report as
or you could just wear sunglasses instead of the whole serum thinigie ... o.O

Heres my theory. I have bright blue eyes and my pupils are always so big. I think that blue eyes are so light sensitive because blue eyes are brightly colored so the lights kind of reflects off of the blue color in the eye and intothe pupil, so when the light bounces it's way in a way in the pupil, the light is magnified or intensified because of the bright blue coloring of the eye surrounding the pupil.

Okay thank ya I like ur theory but my pupils are never really big lol

my eyes are blue-grey and change colors with my moods. my pupils used to be huge and would rarely shrink when the lighting would get brighter. Found out, that's a part of adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue was caused by gluten/wheat intolerance aka celiac disease. may be something to look at, because it's not normal

Blue eyed people comes from a land of the north where sunlight is scarce so when they are exposed to excessive light they have an adverse reaction. And plus most of them are vampires.

People with lighter-colored eyes tend to be more sensitive to bright light (and as true hazel eyes do appear to shift in color from deep brown to a light gold, amber or honey color, they can be considered as lighter-colored eye) , as are those taking certain medications (doxycycline, tetracycline, furosemide), so speak to your pharmacist or physician about medications that may cause photophobia. Dry eyes may cause your eyes to feel sore. Even though they are dry, the feeling of being watery (especially when exposed to bright light) may occur due to poorly spreading tears, or less of them.

I also have blue eyes! I agree it is quite weird why blue eyes(like ours) turn red in pictures and are sensitive to sunlight. I'm no expert but probably because their lighter colored.

if you go into your bathroom and concentrate on the area of the eye and then turn the light on, you will see your pupil change size. If you look at a computer screen for a while in a dark room and look up, you can't see squat. If your eyes are always sensitive to light, then i would tell you to wear a pair of sunglasses to relieve the strain. I do believe that if you protect your eyes with some type of shading, then your eyes will grow stronger without doctors help. Oh...and don't look directly into any bright light because you could potentially damage your retina. Your eyes also might just be simply dry....so blink rapidly for three seconds, eye drops, or close your eyes for a few seconds. The reason is it could just be your pupil and not your eye color.

It all has to do with your blood type + or -. or some thing like that. Whether you are a secretor or non-secretor. I too have blue eyes and sunglasses are a good idea. A secretor blood type produces something that gives you a darker colored puple. Whereas a nonsecretor does not have this and we get sicker than others like those with brown eyes. Also more sick and for a longer period of time.

I know I'm being absolutely useless with this, but my eyes are dark brown and painfully sensitive to light. While eye color may play a part, I highly doubt that's exactly it.

I have blue eyes as well and so does my wife. We both have sensitive eyes to the light. However, I am able to see very well in the dark but my wife is not. I wear sunglasses on a daily basis not just for the sun balance but for protection of small particles as well. Give your eyes time for balance and ease of light. I have eye sight like an eagle the doctors are excited to catch the view. Thanks.

I'm not sure how scientific this is...but...most soft, beautiful objects such as yours, are very commonly scensatitive to such a powerful source of ultra-violet rays

Oh my gosh! I have no idea why but my eyes are blue and on a sunny day, I can't look up or it burns and hurts my eyes! I have to squint and look down and even that is hard! Which makes summer hard for me, because I live in a very sunny place! For some reason, people say I have very big and beautiful eyes.

People with blue eyes and fair skin usually complain about light sensitivity or Photophobia. Blue iris transmits and scatters more unwanted light into retina as compared to brown and black irises.

I don't know the exact answer but I know it has something to do with the blood vessels that run into your eyes. It's also the same reason why people who have both blond hair and blue eyes turn red easier than most.

I have blue eyes white blond hair and very fair skin. I'm the whitest of all my friends. Energy efficient LED or fluorescent lights cause temporary blindness for me. I have to be careful when driving my car or riding my bike or even walking under energy efficient street lights. The lights cause shadows and temporary blindness for me. The lights don't effect my brown eyed girlfriend so she can't understand why I have such a problem with high energy lights. My eyes can't filter out the contrast from bright light to dark background as well as she can. It's like her eyes have a natural light filter and my eyes are wide open with no filter.
