If someone is being negative, or hateful/abusive towards other users, then it makes for a very poor experience on the site and will eventually drive people away. It's fine if you don't agree with someone, but there is never any reason to be rude or offensive about it.
I've noticed that there are some people who always seem to assume that the person who is asking the question is stupid - and even if they give a "valid" answer - it's usually phrased in a way that is a subtle (or not so subtle) poke at the person's intelligence. Even those sort of answers, I think are inappropriate, because it's very demoralizing - some people have strange questions, but I figure, it doesn't hurt to answer them the best way possible - even if I think it's something that everyone should know (or can be found by a quick internet search).
When dealing with the public all personalities come into play. What is sarcastic to one may not be to another. If we all had the same generic response and tone people would very quickly lose interest in the site. As far as people being " on the edge" ... perhaps this is not the place to seek answers. Therapy and emergency hotlines are better suited for those situations.
