Why do the Japanese pamper & spoil their cats so much?

I just saw a documentary about cats in Japan. The documentary showed their cats are loved so much, many people there build their houses with cat walks along the walls and little cubby's in the corners for the cat. It also showed the businesses in Japan can get a lot more business, if they have a cat in residence at their business. The Japanese really seem to dote on their cats and pamper and spoil them a lot more than any other country. What is the reason behind this?
