Just be yourself...don't try to conform to what others are or think you should be. You are an individual and that, in itself, makes you different from all the rest of us and it has nothing to do with being British Indian. There are a lot of people out there in your age group that like to make fun of people that are from another place, of another race, religion, anything that makes them different.....Ignore these people. They are small and exist only to cause others pain. In light of that, look at what you said about your peers "other weirdo Indians"....not a good way to start out....it is the very thing that you, yourself, are trying to avoid. Welcome.....and good luck in your school. Just be nice, be non-judgemental and friends will find you.
dont worry about popularity! if you do you will never be popular or will be for something you arent. just be yourself, and if people dont like that, then its your loss. people will admire you for your confidence if you stand up for what you believe in and for who you are.
Why do you WANT to be popular? Popularity is such a shallow and meaningless thing. So many of the "in", so-called popular kids are shallow and superficial people. Many are mean and selfish. Instead of worrying about being popular, concentrate on developing your brain, improving your grades, and just having fun and enjoying this time of your life.

play sports, be funny. i also read in some of your comments above that u are known by other people but your not popular and you want to stick out. the way to do that is just be really outgoing, make a lot of jokes in class, be loud, and hang out with the popular people.
