That's tough to find beautiful and entertaining. You might have to choose one or the other. For example, little towns near open lakes are gorgeous but usually aren't near big cities with things to do. Just something to think about..

La Paz, Mexico. It is on the Sea of Cortez, has deserts, mountains, good food, nice people, safe, secure, the safest place I've ever lived. Plus it's inexpensive. With a population of around 100,000 it's small but large enough to be entertaining. Rent is very cheap and I live 1/2 a block from the ocean and walking distance to the downtown area. La Paz is the capital of Baja Sur. Oh yeah. No smog.
Kailua Kona, on the big island of Hawaii: on the local news radio the other day the big story was about searching for vandals that peeled the bark off of local mature koa & other trees from the local park. we have no freeways and no strip clubs and no malls. occasional trade winds and listening to the surf pound is the best way to keep stress at a minimum.
Manchester, NH! New Hampshire has the lowest unemployement in US & 2nd lowest crime rate (Maine has lowest). Also, Manchester is a city with tons of entertainement, lots of Irish bars, family restaurants, several top Universities, plus is short drive from plenty of wilderness hiking, big lakes for boating & fishing, beautiful motorcycle rides through smooth roads in giant wilderness, & the best part: low rent, no income tax, & no sales tax!
As a veteran i have had the pleasure of living in Lakehurst New Jersey which was supposed to cater to Elders. Lot of security and to boot a nice ocean beach. I have also had the pleasure of going to Washington State where there are lots of greenery and nature loving folks. They also are into alternative and natural healing, Toastmasters speaking, Karoake, and thrift shops.

El Paso, Texas has to be the safest place with low prices on the houses,Fort Bliss right next to the city keeping us slightly above the economy. The city also is surrounded by mountains so it has no tornadoes or earth quakes what so ever, plus its deep into Texas so it has no hurricanes. The rate of crimes like robbery is very low since its a very nice city. Its also the 20 biggest city in the united states so it has a lot of entertainment like broadway and theme parks. It has beautiful mountains to explore and only about an hour away are lakes and lush forest
I am sure the world has many places just as good or better to live in than those in the northern part of the american continent. Just open your mind and broaden you knowledge beyond what you have seen, heard of and known all your life and you will be surprised what is out here!!
