Why are people so willing to believe a lie or gossip?

Even if a person has had an excellent reputation for years, how can someone else just come along and tell lies about that person? Why do people who have known the person for years, so readily believe the lies and the gossip?

People would rather believe in gossip than the truth, because the truth is not sweet and they can not gossip about it. Most of them do it, because of jealousy and that is why they embrace the rumors. I would advise you to ignore them and hold your head up high.

Because people think that their lives are boring and they think they need drama to be entertained.

Sometimes I think people are secretly happy when they hear bad gossip about someone they know. Really. There's a certain air of superiority to it. Not everyone. And maybe just a little gullible. Just my opinion.

I think it makes them feel better to think that someone else is worse off than they are. I also think that a lot of people enjoy adding embellishments to the gossip so that the story gets wilder & wilder as it gets passed from one person to another
