Focus on washing your scalp, only, with a super gentle moisturizing shampoo, and not the ends. (The ends will be cleaned as the shampoo rinses out.) Use a good detangling conditioner & never brush wet or damp hair. Instead, use a large hair pick or wide tooth comb only. And always gently detangle wet hair starting at the ends, working your way up - never the other way around.
And get away from using detergent shampoos--look for "sulfate", "sulfite", and "sulfanates" on the label and DON'T buy products which contain them. I use Burt's Bees Baby Shampoo and Wash because it doesn't contain any of them--and my hair has never been healthier. A lot of the hair-care manufacturers are now making products which are "sulfate-free". They say so on the label. Those sulfates (sodium laureth sulfate, for example) are actually the same kind of detergents as are used in dish washing detergent!
