What do atheists believe happens to them after they die

Report as

Atheists believe that "death irreversibly and totally terminates individual organic units" - basically that when we die, that's it, there is nothing else.

Truly it's very sad
Report as
At least they don't believe in hell....
Report as
Actually if you read the link that I posted, their beliefs aren't that sad at all - while I personally believe in an afterlife, the world might be a better place if more people believed the following...

"An atheist loves his fellow man instead of god. An atheist believes that heaven is something for which we should work now – here on earth for all men together to enjoy.

An atheist believes that he can get no help through prayer but that he must find in himself the inner conviction and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it, and enjoy it.

An atheist believes that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help to a life of fulfillment.

He seeks to know himself and his fellow man rather than to know a god. An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanquished, war eliminated. He wants man to understand and love man.

He wants an ethical way of life. He believes that we cannot rely on a god or channel action into prayer nor hope for an end of troubles in a hereafter.

He believes that we are our brother's keepers and are keepers of our own lives; that we are responsible persons and the job is here and the time is now.”

How hopeless and void. To miss out on Eternity in Heaven with the creator. Wow, well I don't plan to get left behind. What do they say at the end of their life? " oh well"?
Report as
Shakeena would Jesus want you to be so flip?
Report as
Not meant with any emotion. Simply s questiiom
Report as
This is nonsense. The concept if love and ethics is meaningless in the absence of a moral authority or a god. Basically you say atheist experience a certain chemical reaction (referred to as love) more than theist. The concepts of love and ethics which you claim atheist are superior at exhibiting are immaterial and therefore non-existent as far as atheist are concerned. If you believe they exist even though they are immaterial then you are admitting that there is a moral standard outside of our natural world. So you are nit an atheist.
Report as
What does believing in a "higher power" have to do with emotions and ethics/morals? There are social/cultural standards that we are held to, irregardless of what our spiritual beliefs are. Some people are capable of being responsible for themselves, without the need of a "higher power" to tell them what is right or wrong.

Also, I wasn't necessarily saying that one is better than the other - as far as I'm concerned, whatever works for each person is fine with me. Just pointing out that they have some admirable qualities.

Some good ideas and thoughts being exchanged here. I might as well make a contribution, unwanted as it may be.
Nuke, I hear what you're saying about ethics and morals having no meaning for atheists, and I myself have been trying to understand how feelings and emotions work for years. I think I have loved, and I'm pretty sure I have some morals, but I don't understand why.

The best theory that I've been able to come up with so far is that all my ideas about right and wrong, love, or anything like that have been taught to me when I was a child and was too young to form my own opinions about such things. So, I was raised to expect people to fall in love with someone, to do the "right thing", to fight against the "wrong" things, and to generally be "good" people.

Now that I'm adult though, I spend a lot of time wondering why any of it matters. What exactly is right or wrong? What is love? What is anything? I don't think there is an answer to any of those questions, other than whatever each individual wants it to mean for themselves. Life is what you make it, nothing more, nothing less.
Report as
No offense blastedremnants but you sound like you might kill someone if you can't tell right from wrong. And as to Sephira, what Nuke is saying is that once you admit love is real you admit that there is more than science, more than what you can see and prove. Why can't there be God then? And anyway, there's plenty of proof of God if you look in the right places
Report as
@ yeloe... "love" is a tangible emotion, easy enough to experience (in one form or another), and therefore know it exists. You (and/or others) see "proof" of God in certain things, and that is because you have faith that God is real, and that those things are evidence of Him. While others can look at those same things, and as they do not believe in him, see them from an entirely different perspective.
Report as
Plenty of things that you see as proof of God can be explained by science. The birth of a child for example. Some see it as a miracle or a gift from God. Some see it as science.
Report as
BlastedRemnants
Ha! No worries YeOle, I'm not offended, and I'm not thinking about killing anyone either. Also, I'm not saying that I can't tell right from wrong, I'm saying that right and wrong is a concept that we each have to define for ourselves. Everyone has things that are or are not acceptable to them, a line they choose not to cross. All I mean is that, if there really was a firm meaning of right or wrong, then wouldn't it be the same for everyone? Obviously it's different for everyone though, or there would be no genocides, rapes, or most of that kind of stuff.
Report as
I don't understand tho how someone can deny the existence of God when He has given us many of His signs.

God has always been and will always be. And we know this because the opposite of eternal life is the limited lifespan which we are currently in. He created heaven and hell, because without hell there can be no heaven, just as there will always be good and evil. Wrong and right, left and right, yes and no.
Report as
Yes, well put. But why are things as they are. Somethings (such as emotions) cannot be explained by science. Although you think you can explain them with science you can't. It just doesn't fit. And anyway evidence of God is present throughout history
Report as
that didn't answer the question. wrong.

I give thanks to my parents. I give them thanks by living my life to it's fullest potential and by passing on what they have taught me, to my child. My " creators" however did not create me so that I might drop to my knees and praise them constantly. They also realize that I was not born perfect but they don't expect me to atone for sins I had no control over or even for those sins that I do control. They accept me as being perfectly human. It sound like YOU are living in purgatory with your religious philosophies.

Let's be honest yesomene, the modern day Christianity beliefs are based on Paul's teachings and not Jesus. Make a trough study of their teachings and put them side by side for a certainly you shall see the obvious.

If you're going to invite someone to your religion you must know your religion yourself, so if bellyncdr asks you to explain him the trinity, would you be able to help him ? I don't think so bcuz if all the Christian missionaries that I've met couldn't answer this question I don't think you could. I'm saying this on a level of no insult but Christians as a whole don't understand their core belief so how do you expect someone else to convert to Christianity when you yourself can teach him or make him understand your core belief.(trinity)

Sorry to disappoint you Momo, but the only sad thing is that you (and the millions of people who share your belief) are wasting your life chasing a dream. The part that really cracks me up is that you will never even know. You will die someday, but there won't be a heaven waiting for you, and you won't even get to feel let down or betrayed, because you will simply end, no explanations, no waiting angels, just the flip of an internal switch, from "on" to "off". I actually feel kind of bad for you. :(

Report as
BlastedRemnants
Well Momo, you've asked me before, and I've answered you before, so I guess I just assumed that you knew.

Anas, I feel (a little bit) sorry for you, and all other religious types, because in my view, you are wasting your life trying to meet certain standards in order to gain acceptance into whatever afterlife you believe in. There are most likely a great many things that you don't do, just because your faith says that they are wrong. Have you ever had bacon? It's delicious. Have you ever got drunk and had a wild party? It's a lot of fun. Have you ever had premarital sex with someone you don't love? More fun than bacon OR booze. I just feel like you're missing out on a lot of great stuff in life, and you do it for no reason.
Report as
Maybe because we Muslims love Jesus more than you and we obey him more than, you just proved it yourself. Jesus told u not to have pork and u have bacon, Jesus told u don't get drunk you get drunk, he told u to lower ur gaze when u see a woman and u have prematurial sex... How do you call yourself a Christian if you don't listen to Jesus ?
Report as
so tell me now who has better chance of being saved by Jesus when he comes back, me or you ? I'm putting my head on the glory and your head on the glory not other Muslims or Christian...truly I'm the one who should be feeling sorry for you =)
Report as
BlastedRemnants
Feel free to feel sorry for whoever you want, Momo. I don't do any of those things to rebel against Jesus, I do those things because they are enjoyable and I don't believe in Jesus, so his rules don't apply to me. As far as who has the better chance of being saved, I think we're tied at zero. :)
Report as
Thank you, BlastedRemnant you're admitting that you are not a Christian

Did Jesus not turn water to wine? It sounds as though he indulged with at least a few chosen people. The hypocrisy doesn't cause more of you to question religion- that surprises me. I guess " faith" is what you are told to have when they don't want you to know truth.

Momo had me? Not sure what you mean there Anas. And Momo, I think Dancer was just adding the wine thing because it was relevant to what we were talking about, with the whole "don't be drinkin" rule. It seems to me like she has a point too. If Jesus could drink wine, then why can't Muslims?
Report as
Thank you Blasted, apparently not everyone has their reasoning skills handy today.
Report as
For the same reason y so many Christian and Jews don't drink even tho they're allowed...
We're not banned from alcohol because when you are drunk, you're intoxicated and obviously not yourself, and you do stupid things that maybe otherwise you wouldn't. and you're not pure/clean as you would be without it.

that doesnt mean that all muslims don't, some drink but hide it, which i think is ridiculous. if you're gonna drink then drink. don't make it look like your still a proper muslim person in front of your family. when the Islam first started drinking wine was allowed but when people started to turn up for their daily prayers drunk and couldn't focus on their prayers, thats when the ban of alcohol came in.

It damages your body. God gave you that body. If you are depressed, seek someone to talk to. Alcohol will NOT help you.
Report as
Hope that answered your question Bellydncr
Report as
anas95
I meant to say momo made you say what he wanted you to say that you are not a Christian because u don't follow Jesus's teachings...

Momo u forgot to tell them if it is true that Jesus turn water into wine then he has brought real problems since to our world bcuz we KNOW today that alcohol is a modern world problem
Report as
No momo but thank you for trying. I am merely pointing out the hypocrisy of religion. I do not believe in people being " unclean" such as when women are on their female cycle, in a God that would require our constant praise, or priests, ministers and the like being the middleman to a Supreme Being. Too many things will never ring true to me.
Report as
Just know that if anything seems confusing to you or there is a mistery you dont understand it is not from God for instance the trinity is not from God or Jesus. God is not the author of confusion, He made everything simple for us..he gave us intelligence for a reason to see the falshood and the truth :)
Report as
I'm not in a state of confusion, I just don't like the religious hypocrisy.

Why is it garbage? Is it really so hard to imagine that there is no afterlife? Why is it so frightening for people to think that when they die, that's it, end of story? What is so special about mankind that we have to continue on, even after our deaths?

I don't know wut dey dink, but you're body gets burried you're soul is going to hell or heaven(heaven is the best) depending on your acception of god if you accept jesus is the son of god accept god is the only god and if you don't get killed then... God sends the rapture (the world will not end in a flood, god said, rap andture means the end of the world which god sends) som devil worshiper asks do you wanna go to heaven or hell if you say heaven they kill you non-painfully if you say hell you burn in fire forevver. And after a few years life starts over. if you don't believe this (when da time cums youll see) but when life starts over there is no sin just happiness. if you believe in god don't let dis change your thoughts if you don't let it change your thoughts. all dese oda answers r rong mine is rite.
