It can sometimes not work at all. I take Melatonin supplements. They're supposed to be taken approximately 30 minutes before I expect to go to bed. However, last night I lay awake for over an hour until I finally took a hot bath to get the steam to put me to sleep. I've taken sleep aids for over 10 years. I've noticed there is no set time. It can either work within 15 minutes or even later. Sometimes it doesn't even kick in at all.
also, remember that if you happen to consume anything with caffeine in it (even chocolate has caffeine) that's going to interfere. Though the Melatonin I take tends to cancel out a 12-oz soda.
A super brand sleeping pill takes an average of 15 to 45 minutes to work if it is an oral tablet. If it is in a liquid form, then it will take an average of 10 to 15 minutes for a sleeping pill to work. You should get a subscription from your doctor before you begin using any form of sleeping pills.
