Amazon will deregister any Kindle that a customer owns at there request. This will cause the device to become blacklisted and essentially a "Brick" You can use this device, if you find it, to surf the web only. This is fine if the owner lost their Kindle say by leaving it on a plane, but if it was stolen, say out of their hotel room, then there is a potential problem for the person holding the blacklisted Kindle.
Here is the scary part, it the owner believes that their Kindle was stolen and not just lost they have another option with Amazon. The owner has to file a police report with the Kindle's Serial Number. When provided with a police report, Amazon will flag the Kindle as "Stolen" and it will be blacklisted. If someone calls up to register the Kindle, Amazon will take their name and address and then pass it on to the police department where the stolen Kindle's report was made. If the police department chooses they may come looking for you.
My advice to you, if you have a blacklisted Kindle, is to send it back to Amazon and apologize for any inconvience you may have caused the rightful owner. You can contact Amazon at 1-800-383-7068.
I bought a kindle fire off of eBay and it was reported lost or stolen. I didn't know this at the time and I called amazon and they told me this. I was wondering if there was a way that i could still register it. Like maybe root it or something similar. I DO NOT want to sent it back to amazon or the original owner because then i will be $130 in the hole. I can still surf the web and download certain games from 3rd party websites but that's annoying, that's why i just want to be able to register it.
I have exactly the same problem I've reported it to the police and given the name and address of the bloke who sold it to me but because it is fraud they do not deal with it and it is outsourced. Ebay will not accept a crime reference number as proof that it has been reported which is F723**g pathetic as any insurance company would. I wonder how much of the 150 billion turnover is in stolen goods. They actually told me to send it back to the thief and he would refund my money !!!!!! Morons
I bought mine off Craigslist and it turns out to be blacklisted. I'd go to the police but am thinking the seller might have reported it stolen so he'd get it back! But I have no choice since all I have is his phone number and he won't even answer. Buyers beware..
