Why was it important for everyone to be a part of the war effort during WW2?

Perhaps you should have phrased the question a little different, without the "why" at the beginning. Also I assume you refer to the people in the USA - but in fact this was told to the people in all countries involved in the war. Its simply part of the propaganda, to make people accept the sacrifices war demands of them, from buying war bonds to rationing and from volunteering to join the army to accept that ones son or husband got killed. Shut up and do your duty, then you have done your share in the war effort.
