Hiccups are caused by: eating a lot of food quickly, drinking too much alcohol, swallowing too much air or as a result of emotional stress or excitement. Hiccups are treated by breathing repeatedly into a paper bag for a limited period of time or by quickly drinking a glass of cold water.
Phantom has many a good idea and all is true! I would like to add: hiccups are spasms of your diaphragm which is a muscle located in your torso used to help you breathe etc. It's one of those areas that you don't really hear about but need a lot! :) Another way to get rid of them is, like Phantom, drinking water.. only a little differently. 8 oz. glass of lukewarm water (this is where it becomes silly but very effective) bend in 1/2 and drink out of the outside of the glass 6 continuous swallows. Slowly stand up. This works because it relaxes your diaphragm & wierdly, you concentrate on drinking and not spilling! It's always worked for me! I hope this helps! Good Luck. If you eat too quickly, or drink anything too quickly, it could result in hiccups. A few ways i've gotten rid of them is, plugging my nose while i drink a glass of cold water, or holding your breath for about ten seconds.

ask a friend or family member to scare you at a random time and that should work. Also, take your pointer finger and you middle finger and hold them in place and see how long you dont hiccup for like two to three minutes your cured!!!:)
I have chronic hiccups (Last battle was five weeks) I've tried every way to get rid of hiccups and the ONLY way I have found that is effective is to suck on a piece of candy and swallow the juice and liquid rapidly and repeatedly.(30 seconds approximately) Try to constrict and compress your diaphram (Where the hiccup is created) to make sure they are stoppped before they can start. There will be belching as a result and this is good. This will get rid of trapped air bubbles.
they start when you arent getting enough air. what you can do is place a pencil all the way back in your mouth,sideways......then bite down holding it with your back teeth...then get a glass of watar...and swallow as you still hold the pencil in the same place!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM SERIOUS....IT WORKS!!!!!!!!

The reason why these "cures" work is because you don't focus on the hiccups. They are 90% psychological after a certain point. Just calm yourself, and think about other things. You'll relax and they'll go away. In fact, you can will them away if you're practiced enough.

i dont know how you get it, but i know how to get rid of it: drink 19 TINY sips of water. if that doesn't work, drink a mouthful of water, dont swallow, hang upside down from something and then swallow.
This sounds so silly but it really works. Lift your left leg up and right hand down also while drinking a little liquid. then repeat the same thing but with the right leg. Been using this for over 20 years and it still works.
All you have to do is CONCENTRATE ....stand still and concentrate on your hiccups and the split second before you are going to hiccup Snap your fingers....or say that you are going to hiccup and they will disappear in no time flat , if they don't then you are not concentrating hard enough. believe me it will work unless you have had too much to drink and can't concentrate. LOL
If you want to cure hiccups, plug your ears up very tightly with your fingers, then have someone feed you four or five swallows of water. It will almost always work the first time. If not, try it once more. You will not have to try a third time. Guaranteed!
Ok I know this may sound silly but this really works, ok hold your nose with your right hand and breath through your mouth. Jump on your right leg, do that for about 20 seconds. Sometimes it works though. I hope this helps
