Why are they called "pick-up" trucks?

Pretty simply-put question. My nephew was watching a movie and I made a remark about the pick-up truck. He asked why is it a "pick-up" truck (or just a pick-up)?

They are called pick up trucks because they have the power to"pick up" heavy and light things

The bed of the truck is supposed to hold things, or pick them up.

I was told that Ford, who made the first "pick-up trucks", shipped them to the dealers in crates. Part of the truck was assembled at the local dealer (using the crate as part of the flat bed). Once the truck was completely assembled, the new owner was called to pick it up, hence, unlike larger commercial trucks which were delivered, the dealers called these "pick-up" trucks.
