Whats the first thing an eighteen-year-old should do when starting out on her own?

I'm going to be moving out of my parents' house soon, to nearly the other side of the country. How should I go about getting a job, an apartment, etc.? (P.S. I'm not pregnant, moving in with a guy or relatives, or getting kicked out by my parents. It's just time for me to start off on my own.)

You need to get a job (and have a little money already) to start out. A job brings money and that's what you need to get started. If you could stay with a friend at first to get started that would be good.

If you don't know anyone, save up some money for first month's rent, make sure you have transportation, and then get a steady job. You can start accumulating more items like furniture from there and school a little later.

That's just what i did :)

Thanks. :) I am saving up my money now, but I don't have anyone to stay with. Do you know a good way of finding an apartment quickly?

You can check on google for sites that list apartments available in your state.

What I did after staying with friends, was I found a room for rent on craigslist. You get your own room in someone's house basically that you are renting out and you can use the kitchen and bathroom of course. It is way way cheaper and can be really nice :)

Wow! My 18 yr old just moved out and i really dont think he knew how much things would cost. The 1st thing u need to do is find a place to live and a job. It would be alot easier if you lived with others to lessen your rent. SAVE MONEY before you move out. My son didn't really do that and it really bit him in the butt after the fact. I know you think it is time for you to leave, but really take steps to secure your well being before you go. I cant stress enough the importance of saving money before you leave because once you're out you will find saving very hard.

for sure! he's got a pretty decent job and seems to pay his bills...but i think young kids forget they need to eat and never seem to have enuff for that. Luckily i am close (for now) and buy him food from time to time, but on the same note, for me personally, i have to step back and let the chips fall where they may. As a parent, thats hard, but he wanted to move out and the only way to get the full experience of how it really is..is to live it.

Really the first thing you should do is make sure you are on excellent terms with your parents... Then consider moving down the block for a year first!

Find a place to stay for free. Ex) with a friend or family member. This is only temporary. Then, while you're there, find a job that pays for all of your needs/wants AND is something that you want to do. Then, wait for your first paycheck and look for a place to rent cheap. After that, progress with life. As for your home you can either A) marry and move into spouse's home, B) stay in the rented home or C) over time, save up money to purchase or rent another home. Good luck! And all of this from a 13 year old ^w^
