Would Jesus have been a Republican? Why or why not?

Report as

Neither. I've always said if Jesus were alive he'd be a socialist.

That's what I'm thinking.

Heresy, Kiv -- but undoubtedly true.

And, just as an afterthought -- and apropos nothing at all -- in an episode of Midsomer Murders one religious Englishwoman said, "If Jesus had played a sport I'm sure it would have been cricket."

Jesus would have a hard time choosing a political party if in the Philippines. Here, there are more political parties than candidates. Would you believe there is party whose members must be current or former prisoners? Another is a party for users of household liquefied petroleum gases.

We have an "Australian Sex Party" which is simply a pressure group for the sex industry.

I wrote about it on one of my blogs under "The Parson and the Porn Site" http://dozy-ontheflipside.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/parson-and-porn-site.html

Ha, ha, ha... I remember when Mac Arthur introduced elections in Japan, a former prostitute was elected to Parliament. The General remarked. "She must have a very large clientele".

When did Jesus say anything about abortion?
Report as
Thou shalt not kill? Suffer the little ones to come unto me?

I don't think you can take those statements in the context of abortion, and the second one about suffering the children has nothing to do with child welfare at all. Jesus was simply saying he doesn't think children are to be seen and not heard. I think it's pretty safe to say that had the practice or even just the concept of abortion existed in Jesus' time, he would have been very clear and specific on his views concerning it. He was not one to mince words, and even though he liked vagaries and parables, when it came to topics he was passionate about he wasn't afraid to topple some tables and spell it out. And yet, the Republican party is the party of free enterprise and commerce. I think Jesus would have a problem with so many Starbucks opening up in the garish megachurches all over the country.

Probably, because he lived in Rome.

Could you explain your answer? The Republican party is based in the U.S., and Rome has it's own divided parties. Italy is one of the most polarized countries in the World.
Report as
Ancient Rome was a republic. Thats my reasoning.
Report as
Well, OK, but so is America. And there were competing factions in Rome. One favored a strong senate, the other a strong emperor. And there was almost never peace within either faction. Now, in many ways, this parallels our current political climate in the U.S., but how can you know which side Jesus would come down on simply because he also lived in a republic? What specific aspects of the Republican agenda do you think he would champion? I really am curious.
Report as
Wow! We didn't know Jesus lived in Rome. Not even the 4 Gospel Evangelists knew that.
Report as
Didnt he live in Rome? I though he did because he died there, so i figured he must have lived there a while. I probably have no idea what im talking about.
Report as
No he didnt. Where he lived and died was part of the Roman Empire but not Rome itself.

He wouldn't have been in either party. Republicans aren't perfect anymore than democrats are.

Can't argue against that:)
Report as
Yeah but republicans let us keep our guns.
Report as
What does Jesus have to do with guns?
Report as
That was meant to be a joke. Im kinda bias towards republicans. Also i like guns. Democrats want to do away with the second ammendment. So i just pointed out a flaw wich made the democrats look bad.
Report as
Your argument is flawed. Democrats don't want to do away with the 2nd Amendment. It's on the Bill of Rights. Many democrats love guns too.

I'm agreeing with lorienw. If Jesus was alive today, he would probably start some weird little fringe group -- you know, like he did back in the first century. ;)

Very true. I always found it a little insulting to Jesus' swag that the Repos put him in a box;)

If you are speaking of Jesus from a religious/ biblical standpoint then I must say that he would never have and never will participate in any form of earthly Government or things thereof. Why would he if all things under God were created by him and for him and why would he participate in something he will eventually destroy?

Colossians 1:16 [New International Version (NIV)]
16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

1 Corinthians 15:24 [New International Version (NIV)]
24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

This question is paradoxical. The answer is no, but the explanation explains a paradox and is therefore long and confusing to put into words. There are too many variables.
