The old length of the newspaper will be 22 - 1/2 = 11 inches
The old width of the newspaper will be 12 1/4 + 1 1/4 = 49/4 + 5/4 = 54/4 = 13.5 inches

The width is 13.5 inches not 23.5 inches. Do the math before you give an answer, don't just write random numbers!
