Firstly, do your own research. Read read read. Go to www.cnbc.com, www.marketwatch.com or any other business newspaper. You can't make any investment decisions if you don't understand companies, economies, world politics etc.
Do not listen to anyone's advice because they usually have no clue as to what they are talking about - like the non answer to your question above .
Thirdly, if you hire an investment advisor or financial counselor, only hire a fee for services person, and not someone who is " free" but will make commission off of anything they put you into. They are only interested in making money for them, not you.
I am returning 24% on my retirement and non-retirement investments and I do it myself. So all I can tell you is invest in what you know and understand, and do lots of research.
