How should I heat my basement?
I am renovating an old 460 sf basement apartment in Anchorage, Alaska. The entire house is currently heated with gas forced air, but the basement is always 8 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. There are supply vents in the basement ceiling and return vents near the floor. Electric baseboard is cheap to install, but costly to operate over the long term. Electric floor mats would also be expensive over the long term, and should only be installed under ceramic tile. Other options include a direct vent gas wood stove or hot water baseboard with a gas boiler. These are probably very expensive to install, but would probably be cheaper to operate over the long term. I'm looking for any great words of wisdom regarding these options or any other options.
