What's the best way to get past the awkward stage with your gf?

1) a loud fart generally breaks the ice.
2) tell a joke that has the "F-word" in the punch line.
3) answer the door nude.
4) tickle her mercilessly when she says she needs to go pee.
5) introduce her to your loud / obnoxious / drunk / redneck relatives.

Make her feel comfortable...tease her in a funny, flirty way, ask her about problems and let her know she can talk to you about her problems, and hang out with her and talk to her a lot
