Look for a Hyundai Elantra still under the 6 yr, 50,000 warranty. I am on my third Sonata and get 27 miles (I think city) on it. For $5,000, you are not going to find a new car. If you can, take the car to a trusted mechanic to look it over first. Also take another person with you to carefully look over the car for scratches, etc. before buying it. Look for lower mileage cars. ASK FOR A CARFAX if possible! You should get a pretty good car for 5K!

A peddle car. I had a firetruck one when I was little. Do not know the cost, but it had two ladders, a bell, great handling, and never once did I need to add gas. It was great... health for you too. :P

Look small and 4 cylinders, good starting point.

You can also add a hydrogen cell kit to your car. It's pricey, around three hundred bucks depending on the vendor, but mine has more than paid for itself in the past three months alone. Then again, I also drive a fair clip to get to work. Don't take my word for it, though. Google "Mileage Hydrogen" and it should give you some options. If you do it, though, I recommend a dry cell. Wet cells can mess up your engine. The one from mileageshop.com was pretty good (meaning that the generator was a small box I could actually fit under the hood of my car), but there's a few options out there.

Great question! I have pretty much stuck to American cars until now, but am starting to think the Japanese build the best automobiles for efficiency and durability.

what makes gas mileage better:
changing oil at right times
you can buy a fuel saving chip for $70 itll add about 8mpgs
changeing the air filter
putting engine cleaners in the tank (the stuff you get at wal-mart just put some in everytime you fill up)
lighter cars
2 door cars
4 cy
change the transmission fluid when needed
keeping tires inflated to the right amount
not taking off to fast when at stoplights or stop signs (dont gas it)
drive the speed limits driving fast uses alot of gas
tune ups
weight reductions
keep only what you need in the car the more weight the more gas ( even just a floor board full of garbage effects it somewhat)
better gears will get better gas milage
my suggestion would be get a honda or toyota or some little riceburner and throw some chips in it get street tires make shure its a 2 door and a manual put engine cleaner everytime i fill up dont go very fast( the change from 60-70 is a 4mpg difference on some vehicles) and keep everything tuned up. hope i wasof help
