If it's so tight you can barely turn then use heat.

It depends on the kind of pain you're feeling. Is it a sore, achy type feeling or does it feel like a bruise? If it's a sore feeling, use heat to relax and help heal the muscles, and it should relieve some of the stiffness.

It's unlikely that it's a bruise-ish pain, unless you're creatively clumsy like me. If there is bruising, use a bit of ice to keep swelling down. Make sure if you do use ice that you leave it on for say, 5 minutes and then off for another 5, so that you don't get frostbite or just plain too cold. :)

Both remedies can be used in the treatment of neck pain. It only depends if it really bad or not. For an acute strain, an ice pack is best. It will also decrease inflammation or swelling.

If it hurts, use ice. If it's stiff, use heat. This is a good general rule for any aches and pains, BUT, don't use heat on a recent sprain (a day or two) as you will make it worse.

If in doubt, try ice first. Then heat if ice doesn't work.
