How does the Southern Oscillation Index indicate El Nino and La Nina periods

Report as

The southern oscillation index is determined by computing the monthly mean of sea level anomalities of the different regions that are prone to the El-Nino and la Nina weather patterns and combines it into one series. However, this mode of calculation is filled with a lot of inconsistencies. Visit http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/cas/catalog/climind/soi.html for more information.
