Why do they cut there tail off

Why for some breeds of dogs they cut there tails off is it healthier or do some people just think it looks better I think it's sad though

My sister has a Great Dane/Rottweiler mix and his tale would whip people legs, clear off coffee tables and smack small children in the face....it was finally docked.

It's not too odd, but it's different for sure

thanks tife...his tail was quite long, short hair so it looked like a whip too.
Report as
haha, I bet that hurts. I got whipped by a pit bulls tail before.

@tuff...every once in a while it was kinda funny (when it didn't hurt too much)

haha, your evil! jk jk

No problem. They are actually longer than I realized. All the muscle behind that, I would not want to be hit with it.

It's because some dogs have really hard tails so it is a hazard, they can easily break things and knock things of tables

Some breeds, such as the Pinsher breed, have very long curved tails. It is dangerous to objects in your home and your own legs. When they wag, they knock things over and the tail hitting you in the leg hurts. I have a German Pinscher with a docked tail, and I am thankful that it is. She is a very happy dog and wags her tail a LOT. I couldn't imagine her wagging a full tail that much. I don't think it would be possible to own one, especially with kids, the tail would knock them right over.

It's because they want the dog to look more "sharper". It's really sad though. :(

dogs used for hunting will get tail cut so that in the woods it will make less noise from the dog wagging it

My dog is a pure breed and had its tail cropped(not 'chopped' off) because she was supposed to be a show dog.

I have a pembroke welsh corgi, and her tail is docked, or cut off. It's because since they are herding dogs, they are often in fields, and they used to be easily mistaken for foxes and they would get killed. I'm not sure about other breeds though.

My boxer had hers docked when she was a puppy, I'm not sure why but I cant imagine what she would look like with a tail, she has a stub and she is so cute, and unless I'm mistaken they put the dogs asleep or deaden the tail with local anesthetic so they don't feel a thing.

it is hewlthier for the dog and also it is safer for the owner as a dog that wags its tail alot usually gets their vauables knocked over

The breeds of dogs that get their tails docked naturally have extremely flimsy tails that are really easily broken. It is more humane (the dog doesn't have to deal with the pain of constantly breaking their tail) and a lot less expensive (you don't have to keep paying for the tail to be fixed) if your dog's tail is docked. Also, when a dog or puppy's tail gets docked, they administer both general and local anesthesia, so that the animal is not awake for the procedure and that it won't hurt when the dog wakes up. It's not so much for looks or safety as it is humane.
