How can a 14 year old get more motivated to succeed in high school?

The 9th grade is the most challenging time for teens. What type of activities can motivate teens to succeed and get better grades?

The only way a 14 year old can get motivation to succeed in high school is if you promise to do things for the student, or promise to reward the student. If a student is promised gifts for performing well in school, he or she will put some extra efforts so that he or she can get the gift.

I like the pet idea because teens learn responsibility and it's something to look forward to at the end of the day.
