But an ice pack would work even better. Put some crushed ice cubes in a zippy bag, zip it closed, and wrap it in a dish towel, then place it on your finger--wrap it around the finger if you can. Leave it on for about ten minutes, and then remove for 1/2 hour or so. Repeat this as often as you need. BUT, if the swelling doesn't go down, you should see your doctor to make sure you don't have a broken bone. This is especially important if the finger is also bruised-looking.
